Brook or Speckled Trout
SPECKLED TROUT OR BROOK TROUT - A shy,
wily game fish and a tough fighter. You'll find him in secluded shady places... beneath
undercut banks, among root tangles, in the depths of shaded pools, and in deep feeding
lanes that curl among the rocks. The Speckled Trout is a rich greenish-brown in colour,
with light "worm track" markings on his back, and a number of pin-point dots of
red and a halo of pale blue on his sides. His average weight is a little better than
a pound, but he's a real scrapper, especlally when caught with light tackle.
He's more active in the spring when water's cool. He
likes bright colours. Flies like the Parmachene Bell, Royal Coachman, Silver Doctor,
Secordis and the Red Badger Streamer are favourite,. Early in the season live bait such as
worms and minnows account for a lot of speckled trout.
ONTARIO RECORD (1998) 14.5 lbs, 6.6
kgs
