Fishing for Muskie
by Pete Maina
Night fishing for muskie is actually no
different than daytime, other than it being
dark. The tactics and effective presentations
are the same; it’s a lower traffic timeframe
though, so it’s a good time to concentrate on
the most popular (often most diverse structural
elements) spots. Being dark, does offer its
challenges, but a few little things in
preparation make for efficiency.
If you’re going to seriously fish after dark for
several hours, consider these basic
preparations. It’s a good idea to put away all
loose lures that won’t be used. Have only the
lures you intend to use out – and it’s most
efficient to have these pre-rigged on separate
rod and reel combos. After dark fish generally
aren’t as lure-picky; if going to do any
change-ups not already-rigged, have those ready
in one area, as if not prepared, everything
takes a little longer in the dark. And, if
someone is wandering around looking for
something, other casters can’t see them, and …
Make certain there is a headlamp for every
angler. Hands-free lighting is a must to handle
simple tasks like freeing weeds, handling
backlashes and landing fish. (A spotlight,
especially with multiple anglers, is helpful for
landing – and just a fun way to watch the
battle.) Put strips of glow tape on all
hard-bodied plugs (on the top of the back) and
strips on bucktail blades or around the shaft.
Charged every fifteen minute or so – you can see
lures easily as they approach the boat and do
good figure eights or O’s. (And they’re fun to
watch fly through the air too.)
Know exactly where ALL release tools and landing
devices are, and if you have intentions for
photos, be certain the cameras are ready and in
a known location. Be prepared with the proper
maps, and aware that fog/heavy darkness can
affect your ability to recognize location … if
you have GPS always a good idea to plug in the
boat landing, and if not, be certain you
landmark it using available lights or some
method. .
