Further Details:
Although a limited number of rods and reels will be supplied by
the MNR and Canadian National Sportsman Shows on a first come,
first served basis, registered participants will be given
priority so everyone is encouraged to bring their own equipment
if they have it.
Volunteers will hand out rods-provide some basic instruction and
assist the young anglers with a worm/bobber/sinker and hook set
up. For many this will be their first experience catching and
handling a fish.
The primary target fish species will be Round Goby - an invasive
fish found in the River that may disrupt the natural ecosystem
of both the Pefferlaw River and Lake Simcoe. Therefore this
particular Fishing Festival is unique in that it assists MNR
with their research and is fun for the kids at the same time. It
is expected though, that kids will also have fun catching an
abundance of other fish from the river such as these native
species: Pumpkinseed and bluegill sunfish, brown bullhead
catfish, yellow perch, rock bass and the occasional largemouth
bass or common carp. Catch and release of these species is
encouraged – however the season will be open for all of these
species and as long as daily conservation limits are maintained,
anglers will be able to bring fish home to eat if they wish.
